The conservation program of the zoo offers a delighting extravagance to have a look at some of the rare sensitive and endangered high altitude animals like Tibetan Wolf, Snow Leopard, Siberian Tiger, Yak and lot of other species.
After entering the zoo the first thing you can see is a variety of birds in a large Aviary, a wide circular cage. For example, different kinds of birds inside including Rose Ring Parakeets, Hill Mynas, Ring-Necked Pheasants, Blue Gold Macaw and more. The center of attraction here is the two massive Macaws of Yellow and Red combinations.
The straight stretch goes upside where the path leads towards the hotbed of the Asiatic Black Bear. Above you can see the black bear at the altitude of 10,000 to 12,000 ft. which is their natural habitations. Apart from India, they are usually found in the higher regions of Nepal, Tibet, and China. These Black Bears weigh around 90 to 120 kg usually. But, during the winter when they come down due to hibernation they can gain weight up to 180kg for fattening.
Walking a bit further from there to the western part of the zoo you may find the high altitude bovine. That is Yak, which is now becoming a vulnerable animal. Yaks are basically very calm and peaceful animal and often gazing like a statue. A matured male Yak of 4 years can weigh till 1000 kg where the female one weighs just one-third of that. Yaks have a life span of 23-24 years.
On this stretch apart from Yaks, other animals like Sambar Deer, Barking Deer, Blue Sheep, Goral or mountain Goat, Himalayan Tahr and a lot of other animals can be seen here.
The upper region of the zoo has some fierce animals like Indian Tigers along with the Siberian Tigers one of the rarest. The area has been fenced with wires. Besides, you can see the extinct animals like Tibetan Wolf in open vicinity and Jackals as well.
The male Snow Leopard, Makalu is been imported from the Dudley Zoological Park of the United Kingdom along with 9 female and other male Snow Leopards. In total number here are 10 Snow Leopards in the zoo.
Circling back to the Aviary next to it there is the Red Panda Conservation. In front, there are some arrangements for seats where you can sit and enjoy the vision of the rare Red Panda feeding along to the bamboo trees. It is a nice view indeed. This breed of Pandas can weigh to 4-5 kg and 50-60 cm in length. In confinement, Red Pandas can endure up to 16 years of life span. These Red Pandas are very extinct animal. Most of the time they spent on the top of the bamboo trees and after the dark, they come down and seek for food. They are vegan in nature and love to have bamboo leaves and fruits.
At the same place, you can find out the huge aquarium and an area of pheasant or curlew as well as the Himalayan Newt, a rare species from the segment of salamander.
On the contrary, there are Takins brought from Germany to Darjeeling Zoo. Takin is the national animal of Bhutan which is a hierarchical breed of goats.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park or Darjeeling Zoo remains open from 8:30 a.m. morning to 4:00 p.m. in the evening. There is an entry fee to enter the zoo and it is open for all.
