Dhirdham temple is one of the sacred temples in Darjeeling. Basically, the temple is the replica of the Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal. The temple was built-in the year of 1939 by Purna Bahadur Pradhan. Later, to honor him, the British gave him the title of Rai Sahib in the year 1936. The beautiful temple was designed by the renowned architect Beg Raj Sakya. The crafts and the painting on the temple is a priceless asset. In like manner, the depiction of the temple has tempted people to witness the divinity of nature.
The temple resembles the well-known Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal. Rai Sahib Purna Bahadur Pradhan wanted to create the temple of Lord Shiva similar to that. Hence, the temple was built with multi-layered Pagoda shaped roofs and the externals. Dhirdham Shivalay is considered one of the oldest Hindu temples in the region as well as the holiest.
